03/14/2005 - Shanghaied in Natchez

Anyone that read Under-The-Hill-Saloon’s news story entitled Parking Update May 13, 2004 would have seen a picture of a sign that directed Under-the-Hill visitors to a parking area called Water Street. Unfortunately, as the story points out, visitors that followed the sign’s directions were met with a locked gate.

Low and behold that sign has disappeared!!

What’s going on?

Thousands of tourists come to Natchez to view the numerous historic homes and buildings around town. And most all of them make a trip down historic Silver Street to see what at one time was the most notorious area on the Mississippi River, Natchez Under-the-Hill.

Apparently Natchez Under-the-Hill is still notorious to a certain degree.

Some 200 years ago it wasn’t uncommon for a less than cautious man who had ventured into the wrong establishment Under-the-Hill to find himself shanghaied. The poor soul never knew what hit him until he awoke on a ship somewhere far out to sea.

We assume the Silver Street Visitor Parking sign has been shanghaied too!
